چکیده
Abstract Themeda and Heteropogon are closely related grass genera frequently dominant in tropical C4 grasslands. Relationships between them poorly resolved, impeding ecological study, especially of T. triandra with a broad distribution from Africa to East Asia, H. contortus pantropical distribution. Our analyses plastome nuclear genomes comprehensive sampling demonstrate that neither genus is monophyletic as currently circumscribed. Plastome data place melanocarpus ritchiei Themeda. Nested quadrivalvis unica, demonstrating this widespread species more morphologically diverse than previously recognized. fischerianus nested contortus. The picture complex for triticeus sister the analysis Cymbopogon analysis. This incongruence plastid phylogenetic trees suggests hybridization Cymbopogon-related genome donors dating estimates Themeda–Heteropogon crown age at c. 7.6 Myr, consistent Miocene grassland expansion. diversified 1–2 Mya Pleistocene. These results establish foundation studying history these ecologically significant grasses ecosystems they form.

Chromosome number in South American species of Bothriochloa (Poaceae: Andropogoneae) and evolutionary history of the genus.
Mitotic chromosome number of 14 taxa of Bothriochloa native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay were surveyed. Chromosome numbers of B. eurylemma, B. meridionalis and B. velutina are reported for the first time, with 2n = 6x = 60, and this ploidy level is the most common among the studied taxa. In addition, new cytotypes were found for B. alta (2n = 60), B. barbinodis (2n = 60), B. exaristata (2n ...
متن کاملComparison of common cytotypesof Andropogon gerardii(Andropogoneae, Poaceae).
Many plant species contain populations with more than one polyploid cytotype, but little is known of the mechanisms maintaining several cytotypes in a population. Andropogon gerardii cytotypes were compared to evaluate different models of autopolyploid cytotype coexistence. The enneaploid (90 chromosome, 9x) cytotype was found to be larger and taller than the hexaploid (60 chromosome, 6x) cytot...
متن کاملMolecular evolution of FLORICAULA/LEAFY orthologs in the Andropogoneae (Poaceae).
Members of the grass family (Poaceae) exhibit a broad range of inflorescence structures and other morphologies, making the grasses an interesting model system for studying the evolution of development. Here we present an analysis of the molecular evolution of FLORICAULA/LEAFY-like genes, which are important developmental regulatory loci known to affect inflorescence development in a wide range ...

UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY Phenolic compounds exuded by roots have been implicated in allelopathic interactions among plants. Root enzymes that destroy phenolics may protect plants against allelopathic inhibition and thus may aid in invasiveness. Phenolic-degrading enzymes are chiefly found in aboveground plant parts, but have also been previously reported in root tissues where the enzy...
متن کاملComparisons of the molecular evolutionary process at rbcL and ndhF in the grass family (Poaceae).
We examine rate heterogeneity among evolutionary lineages of the grass family at two plasmid loci, ndhF and rbcL, and we introduce a method to determine whether patterns of rate heterogeneity are correlated between loci. We show both that rates of synonymous evolution are heterogeneous among grass lineages and that are heterogeneity is correlated between loci at synonymous sites. At nonsynonymo...
